United States California Chinese-American Mayor of Arcadia, Los Angeles Wang AilinEileen Wang, who has been embroiled in a major Chinese espionage scandal since last year, unexpectedly made headlines again this Monday (May 11) because she has now decided to plead guilty, admitting that she was an agent of the Chinese Communist Party. This case, occurring on the eve of the Trump-Xi meeting, has further fueled speculation.
Arcadia is one of the most representative Chinese-populated cities in the Greater Los Angeles area. In recent decades, its excellent school districts and housing options have attracted a large number of wealthy Chinese families from Taiwan and China. Wang Ailin, 58, became the city's mayor in February of this year, but has now fallen from grace due to a spy case, shocking the entire American society that a CCP agent could so easily and undetected ascend to the position of mayor of a local city in the United States through the democratic system.
According to information released by the U.S. Department of Justice, Wang Ailin is accused of, between 2020 and 2022, accepting instructions from Chinese officials along with her former fiancé Sun Yaoning to promote pro-China rhetoric within the United States.
The investigation revealed that the two individuals jointly operated a news website called "US News Center." They would obtain designated articles from high-ranking Chinese officials and then report the click-through rates to the Chinese side after publication.
For example, in August 2021, Wang Ailin proactively sent a screenshot of an article that had "exceeded 8 views" to the other party. After the other party replied with satisfaction, "That's great," Wang Ailin even respectfully used the title "Leader" to thank them. The prosecution therefore concluded that Wang Ailin had a clear subordinate relationship with high-ranking Chinese officials.
It is worth noting the role played by Wang Ailin's ex-fiancé, Sun Yaoning. In addition to running a large-scale external propaganda website together, he also personally orchestrated the process in 2022, helping Wang Ailin to be successfully elected as a city councilor and paving the way for her future mayoral election.
Sun Yaoning admitted last year to acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government and was sentenced to four years in prison. At the time, Wang Ailin tried her best to distance herself from the case in an interview, denying involvement and claiming that Sun Yaoning was no longer her fiancé. But now the truth can no longer be hidden. Wang Ailin herself has agreed to plead guilty and resigned from her position as mayor, and could face up to 10 years in federal prison.
In addition, the investigation also found that, besides Sun Yaoning, the name of John Chen, a former high-ranking official in China's intelligence system, also appeared in Wang Ailin's case.
As early as 2021, Wang Ailin had frequent contact with Chen Jun, who was living in Southern California at the time. Chen Jun was the senior Chinese official who was accused of conspiring with Sun Yaoning when he was involved in the case last year. Chen Jun had already been sentenced to 20 months in prison by the end of 2024 for bribing U.S. public officials and illegal agency.
Wang Ailin's news has sparked great discussion in the local Chinese community, and she has become the first senior official in Arcadia's history to resign after being accused of being an illegal agent of a foreign government.
The Arcadia City Council consists of five members, and the mayor's position is filled on a rotating basis. However, the fact that an agent directed by a foreign government was able to directly manipulate local elections in the United States has been identified by the FBI as a prime example of "foreign interference in U.S. local politics and infiltration of grassroots elected officials."
