On the eve of the Trump-Xi summit scheduled for next Thursday (September 24) in Washington, Reuters reported that U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will meet with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng at 10:30 a.m. Eastern Time on Sunday (the 20th) at JPMorgan Chase’s Manhattan headquarters, where the two sides will discuss artificial intelligence (AI) safety, trade, rare earths, and other economic issues. In addition to that day’s high-level meeting, technical and working-level consultations may continue through Monday (the 21st).
China’s Ministry of Commerce officially announced on Saturday (the 19th) that, as agreed by both China and the United States, He Lifeng will lead a delegation to the U.S. from September 19 to 23 for economic and trade consultations with the American side. Beijing said the two sides will hold discussions on economic and trade issues of mutual concern, guided by the important consensus reached by the two heads of state.
Notably, although this high-level U.S.-China meeting is being held at JPMorgan’s New York headquarters, JPMorgan itself is not taking part in the negotiations.
People familiar with the matter said that with the United Nations General Assembly about to convene in New York, security levels in Manhattan have been elevated recently, and JPMorgan therefore agreed to provide its headquarters building as the venue for the talks.
U.S. officials revealed that JPMorgan Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon has been invited to attend the White House state banquet for Xi Jinping next week. In May this year, when U.S. President Donald Trump traveled to Beijing to hold this year’s first summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Dimon did not join the delegation of U.S. business executives accompanying Trump on the China visit.
