U.S. tech billionaire Elon Musk‘s AI agent tool Grok Bot has recently been hit by reports of abnormal usage limits. Several paid users said their weekly usage quotas dropped sharply without warning before they had even expired, and that their quotas were quickly depleted even without heavy usage. In response, Musk personally addressed the issue on social media platform X on Sunday (November 1), stating that Grok Bot’s operating costs have risen so high that the company is struggling to break even.
Tech website TechCrunch reported that a number of Grok Bot users recently complained on X that their weekly usage quotas ran out earlier than expected; some users even found that a quota they had only used about 50% of would suddenly jump to 100% in an instant.
When users demanded a quota reset, Musk replied bluntly, “The operating costs of providing Grok Bot are far higher than the revenue — it’s simply unsustainable.” In addition, in another reply he asked users whether they thought the fee for upgrading to a higher-tier quota plan was too expensive. However, he did not specify the exact extent of the adjustment.
Meanwhile, Grok Bot’s usage and billing dashboard also experienced a system malfunction that same day. Although the company claimed the issue had been fixed, it remains unclear whether the quota anomalies reported by users were caused by a bizarre system glitch or by an unofficial reduction in quotas.
Grok Bot is a product launched by Musk’s AI company xAI in August this year. It is an AI agent tool that can operate applications through a virtual computer, browse websites, and execute multi-step tasks. Unlike traditional chatbots, users simply need to hand over data and give instructions, and Grok Bot
can complete complicated tasks such as online shopping. However, since this type of “fully automated execution” service consumes a large amount of computing resources, the company has adopted a tiered subscription system with weekly usage quotas to control operating costs.
Notably, Grok Bot’s user growth has been remarkably rapid. During SpaceX’s Q3 2026 earnings call held on the 20th of last month, it was revealed that Grok Bot had accumulated roughly 800,000 weekly paying users by early October, more than double the previous month’s figure. Musk even described it at the time as one of the fastest-growing products he had ever seen in his lifetime.
