Recently, some media quoted a U.S. Pentagon document as reporting that the United States plans to deploy nuclear weapons in the United Kingdom in response to Russia's escalating threats. If the news is true, this will be the first time the United States has taken such measures in 15 years.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the US military has proposed deploying nuclear weapons at RAF Lakenheath. The proposal is said to suggest placing a nuclear weapon three times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima during World War II.
RAF Lakenheath is operated by the United States Air Force in accordance with British regulations and is currently stationed by the United States Air Force's 48th Fighter Wing. As early as the Cold War, nuclear warheads were deployed at the base, but these missiles were dismantled in 2008 as the threat from Russia weakened.
In response to relevant reports, the Pentagon currently refuses to comment, while the British Ministry of Defense neither confirms nor denies denial. As for Russia, the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed concern about this, accusing the United States and NATO of taking an aggressive stance against Russia, which will force Russia to take countermeasures.
