座落於衣索比亞東北部的海利古比山（Hayli Gubbi），在沉寂近1.2萬年後於週日（11月23日）首次噴發，火山煙柱直衝天際，高達14公里。
根據《法新社》報導，海利古比山當天噴發數個小時，噴出的火山灰雲已飄至葉門、阿曼、印度與巴基斯坦北部，但尚不清楚是否有人傷亡。
美國研究機構及和組織史密森尼學會（Smithsonian Institution）的全球火山計畫（Global Volcanism Program）表示，海利古比山在近1.2萬年期間並無已知的噴發紀錄。
據了解，海利古比山海拔約500公尺，位於衣索比亞首都阿迪斯阿貝巴東（Addis Ababa）北方約800公里，靠近厄利垂亞的邊界。這一地區地質活動劇烈，是兩板塊交界的大裂谷（Rift Valley）地帶。
