中美洲巴拿馬週五（10月9日）發生規模7.7強震，震源深度僅約12.6公里，首都及中部多地劇烈搖晃，甚至連正在直播的體育節目也被迫中斷。畫面可見，棚內燈具、天花板隨著震動劇烈晃動，玻璃杯掉落，5名主持人與評論員原本試圖保持鎮定，最後仍匆忙放下麥克風、抱頭逃離現場，驚險過程全被鏡頭拍下。

這起地震對巴拿馬而言相當罕見。根據《法新社》報導，這是今年拉丁美洲至少第四起規模超過7.0的地震。強震持續約1分鐘，距離震央約200公里的首都巴拿馬市也感受到明顯搖晃，民眾慌忙逃離高樓。巴拿馬中部部分建築倒塌、道路受損，當局並測得十多起強烈餘震，其中一起規模超過6.0。
巴拿馬總統穆里諾（José Raúl Mulino）宣布這起事件為「重大災害」，教育部則宣布全國停課，首都國際機場也一度關閉，多個航班改降其他機場。目前官方尚未公布確切傷亡情況，當局正持續掌握災情。
